James Lake is a talented local Exeter artist who makes remarkable sculptures. James’s preferred material is cardboard – an accessible, recycled material that he uses to make large sculptures which blur the boundaries between high art and low art. James believes in art for all, whatever your race, gender, age, ability and disability – a consideration that has taken him from the arts arena to also work on art projects in local schools and communities.
James approached Sound in Theory to create a website for him that would showcase the sculptures he has created, whilst provide some information about his arts background and raise awareness about the work he does in schools and communities. Like James’s art, the website needed to be accessible, contemporary, and have broad appeal.
Sound in Theory created a full flash website that showcases the local artist’s remarkable work, and was made on a limited budget. This full flash website has a simple, intuitive navigation structure that distributes James’s work along three clear headings: Personal Works, Education and Community, ensuring the visitor can find information in just a few clicks. It is peppered with clean, crisp flash slideshows that showcase James’s art in the best way possible: in clear photographs. These are accompanied by a small amount of background text.
The website is held together by an elegant design: the grey, white and black colour palette allows the richness of the photographs to come to the surface; whilst the clean lines and simple font and background allow the depth of his sculptures to really stand out.
