About Us

Sound in Theory is a small web & creative agency based in Exeter. During our 16 years of operation we’ve worked with some great clients, many of whom have been with us for the larger part of the company’s history. This is how we’ve measured success: forming honest, close relationships with our clients that stand the test of time.

About The Role

We are seeking an experienced web designer to join our team. We specialise in web application and website design, working on a wide variety of engaging projects including ongoing development of large eCommerce websites, high profile brochure sites, UX oriented accommodation and booking websites, and smaller Wordpress sites. As a small company the role will be fairly eclectic, and depending upon applicants may also include creative input into branding and graphical projects.

Sound in Theory values good user experience as a first priority and our designers, developers and digital project managers working closely together to achieve this. We’ve seen great success developing and innovating in website and UX design, and our clients have enjoyed growth and success off the back of this.

We’re seeking the following from our new Web Designer:

  • At least 3 years of commercial experience in the role
  • Strong understanding and familiarity with the tools: Figma, Adobe XD etc
  • Be motivated to actively drive us in the right direction in terms of workflow, tools and processes
  • Keen and proactive when exploring the latest design philosophies and developments
  • Supported by our project management team, be able to manage the creative burden as projects and requirements shift
  • Be an excellent communicator, willing to work with our digital project managers and balance client and company needs with the artistic requirements of each project

Website design is a blend of artistic passion combined with a rigorous understanding of the platforms and technology. It combines visual creativity with the more abstract kind: how to develop the most fluid and effective user journeys and showcase a client’s offering to its fullest. Whilst UX development is a large part of the role, equally important is artistic creativity: design, layout, tone and typography. It’s a process we have always loved, and is an integral part of our company offering.

Why Work With Us?

We’re focused on our team. We value every member: they are listened to, respected, and drive their own career path.

Whilst we work hard and are proud of what we create, Sound in Theory is fundamentally a vehicle for lifestyle. There’s no expectation of evenings and weekends, and everybody takes their holiday days. It’s a nice part of the world to spend this free time: some of our team live in Sidmouth and Exmouth by the sea, and others live nearer our office in Exeter, which is a beautiful city to live in.

‘Why work with us’ is also a personal question, so we posed it to a couple of our team:

Sound in Theory have provided me with the opportunity to grow my confidence and career within the space of a supportive, hilarious and smart team. I thoroughly enjoy interacting with the team each day, as well as my clients. Over the last four years, I have grown into a more senior role which has given me the opportunity to have a say in company decisions and which path we take.

- Lucy

I began working with Sound in Theory soon after finishing my studies. The company has helped grow my skills a lot since I started as a junior position six years ago. One of the most important things is that every employee is valued as equal, their opinion is listened to and taken into account. Another aspect is that Sound in Theory has been very good helping me balance work life and personal life.
